The data center landscape is rapidly transforming with NVIDIA GPUs at the forefront of this revolution. Enterprise data centers have undergone significant transformation over recent decades. Initially designed for monolithic software packages, these facilities evolved through several distinct phases. During the Virtualization Era, software-defined data centers were created, allowing application mobility and enabling centralized management through unified interfaces. However, this added CPU processing load, reducing application capacity, as infrastructure functions like networking, storage, and security ran on the CPU. The Cloud Computing Revolution then disaggregated monolithic applications into microservices, enabled concurrent development through CI/CD methodologies, and generated massive east-west network traffic, requiring Mellanox high-speed, low-latency networking solutions. Following this, the AI Transformation saw deep learning introduce magical consumer services, drove widespread adoption of NVIDIA GPUs, made AI services the largest consumers of GPU supercomputing, and added growing infrastructure software requirements. Modern data centers face a critical challenge: infrastructure software processing has become one of the largest workloads, consuming resources that should be dedicated to applications and services. The solution? NVIDIA's BlueField Data Processing Unit (DPU). NVIDIA GeForce NOW demonstrates the power of NVIDIA GPU technology in cloud environments. It is a cloud gaming service with 10 million members across 70 countries, experiencing 10x growth in just two years. This service requires optimization for latency, visual quality, frame rate, and security. It currently uses NVIDIA vGPU technology and is transitioning to BlueField for improved performance and efficiency. NVIDIA's BlueField DPU represents a paradigm shift in data center architecture. BlueField-2 offloads infrastructure from applications, accelerates networking, storage, and security, improves quality of service while increasing concurrent users, and provides excellent return on investment. The DOCA SDK simplifies application offload to BlueField, featuring deep packet inspection, secure boot, and TLS crypto offload. It also includes a hardware-based real-time clock for synchronous operations and supports forward compatibility with future BlueField generations. BlueField-3 features 22 billion transistors, is the first 400 Gb/s networking chip, includes 16 Arm CPU cores for virtualization software, and boasts advanced security capabilities. It is equivalent to 300 CPU cores for network traffic processing. The BlueField roadmap plans for a new generation every 18 months, with BlueField-4 planned for 800 Gb/s with AI computing, projecting a 100x performance increase in three years. Approximately one-third of the 30 million data center servers shipped yearly are consumed by software-defined data center operations. This infrastructure workload is growing faster than Moore's Law can accommodate. BlueField technology offers a solution by offloading and accelerating these workloads, freeing CPUs to run applications and services.
